Resin bound surfacing provides a water-permeable surface when laid on an open grade binder asphalt. The resin bound mixture has open voids across the surface, allowing air to flow freely and surface water to filter through the structure, making it an ideal permeable system for driveways, paths, tree pits and areas prone to standing water making it SuDs compliant (sustainable urban Drainage System)

Compared to traditional materials such as concrete, self-binding gravel, or asphalt, resin-bound surfaces offer superior resilience and a longer lifespan. When installed and maintained by skilled professionals, resin-bound driveways can last for 25 years or more.

Resin driveways come pre-installed with a protective sealant designed to prevent damage and extend the life of the surface. Over time, this sealant can wear down due to weather conditions, vehicle traffic, and natural aging.

The frequency of resealing your resin driveway depends on various factors, such as the local climate, and the amount of traffic the driveway endures. On average, it is recommended to reseal your driveway every 2 to 4 years. However, it is crucial to monitor the condition of the sealant regularly and take action if you notice any signs of wear and tear sooner.

A well-prepared sub-base provides the necessary support for the resin bound surface, helping to prevent issues such as cracking, sinking, and uneven surfaces. It also ensures that the resin adheres properly, maximising the longevity and performance of the finished surface.

There are several materials that can be used to create a solid sub-base for resin bound systems. The choice of material will depend on the specific requirements of your project and the condition of any existing foundations.

Asphalt
Asphalt is a popular choice for sub-bases due to its strength and durability. It provides a smooth and even surface, which is ideal for the application of resin. When using asphalt as a sub-base, ensure it is well-compacted and free from any loose material or debris.

Concrete
Concrete is another excellent option for a sub-base. It offers a stable and robust foundation that can support the weight and demands of a resin bound surface. For best results, the concrete should be properly cured and free from cracks or damage.

Tarmac
Tarmac, similar to asphalt, provides a strong and reliable base for resin bound systems. It is essential to ensure that the tarmac is in good condition, with no signs of deterioration or instability.

Once the Resin Bound surface has been laid, the initial curing phase begins. This phase is critical as it sets the foundation for the strength and longevity of the surface.

The resin will take approximately 8 hours to cure initially. During this time, the resin mixture undergoes a chemical process that solidifies it, creating a durable and stable surface. Although the resin may seem cured after these 8 hours, it’s essential to allow additional time before using the surface to ensure maximum durability.

While the resin may appear solid after the initial curing phase, it is not yet ready to bear any weight. To prevent damage and ensure a robust surface, we recommend waiting a full 24 hours before allowing any foot traffic.

Vehicles places a significant amount of stress on the Resin Bound surface. Therefore, it’s crucial to allow sufficient curing time to accommodate this heavier load.

We recommend waiting at least 48 hours before permitting any vehicular traffic on the newly laid Resin Bound surface.

Laying resin in the rain is not advisable because moisture disrupts the curing process, prevents proper bonding, and can cause an uneven finish.
